NY State Teachers Retirement Search

Teachers who left public school employment before becoming vested may be eligible for a refund of their New York State Teachers Retirement System contributions.

There are more than 13,000 unclaimed & abandoned accounts within the NYSTRS, with the average balance being $1,780. Most have failed to maintain contact or provide an updated forwarding address, and therefore haven’t been contacted.

If contributions are not withdrawn, their accounts are coded “Unclaimed”. If the contributions remain unclaimed for 18 months, they are considered “Abandoned”. Whether coded unclaimed or abandoned, these funds may be claimed at any time by the former employee or their beneficiary or estate, if deceased.
