Hundreds of millions of dollars in money orders are never cashed. The U.S. Postal Service reports $25 million in Postal Money Orders are never submitted for payment. Private issuer MoneyGram reports $160 million in uncashed money orders.
If a money order is lost or stolen prior to being cashed, it can be replaced. The USPS and other issuers will not contact you if a money order is not cashed – you must initiate action to obtain a replacement.
